The Berkeley Arts Council is providing a stage for the talented and dedicated dance community in the Tri-State area where dancers can perform and have the experience of auditions and stage performance. We need great performers to put on a creative and thrilling show!
We are a nonprofit, volunteer arts service organization, and proceeds from the event will be returned to the community through matching for State Art grants, or cultural Arts Programs in our schools.
We hope to have the best and brightest dancers to make our event a success!
Auditions are Sat. Mar. 31, 2012.
Audition time slots will be assigned between 11:00 am and 3:00pmFinals are Sat., April 28, 7:00 pm-9:30 pm

Those selected to appear in the finals (April 28) will receive an additional packet of information by email when the selection is announced.
Number of entries that can be accepted for each category is limited due to audition time available. ENTRIES ARE ACCEPTED ON A FIRST COME/FIRST SERVED BASIS. Before submitting your application, check this page for updates as solo auditions fill first.
Applications may be submitted online until March 15, with payment through PayPal by credit card. Online registrations get to us quickly!

April 28: ‘Show Us You Can Dance’ at Musselman High School, 7:00 – 9:30 pm. Winners announced following the performances.AWARDS: All registration fees will be allocated to awards. Additional cash prizes may come from sponsorships.
Prizes for winning groups will be First Place $300; Second Place $200 and Third Place $100. Prizes for solos and duets depend on number of dancers in each category, but at least a first and a second prize will be awarded.
If audition judges select more than five in a category to compete in the finals, a third prize will also be awarded.
COMMUNICATIONS: All information will be posted on this page:www.berkeleyartswv.org/youcandance/. Documents and information packets in addition to registration will be available as needed to download in PDF format. Copies may be printed as needed. Announcements of finalists and acknowledgment of registration will be by email, so a valid email address is required.
AGE DIVISIONS: Age is as of January 1, 2012. Bring age verification to the auditions so it can be checked if needed. Dancers ages 9 -12yrs and 13-18yrs compete in separate divisions in Solo and Duet divisions. The Groups Category may include mixed ages (9 to 18 yrs): one category fits all.
CATEGORIES:
SOLO: one performer (Entry Fee: $20)
DUET:tTwo dancers (Entry Fee: $25)
GROUP: from 3 up to 20 dancers.
(Entry Fee: Small Group 3-9 Dancers: $35; Large Group 10-20 dancers: $50)Dancers will be performing for the best overall dance performance. Entries will be judged against all the performers in their respective age group and category (solo, duet, etc.) For example, ballet may compete against hiphop or jazz. An individual dancer may compete in any two categories, (i.e-solo and group OR duet and solo) but not in all three categories.
SCORING CRITERIA: Judges will score performances on technique, showmanship, level of difficulty, entertainment value, and overall performance quality. Scoring sheets with judge’s comments will be e-mailed following the auditions. Judges will be announced and their bio’s posted on the website prior to auditions and finals. Non monetary recognition awards (Costume, showmanship, etc.) will also be presented.
PERFORMANCE STYLES ACCEPTED for this competition include: clogging, character, ethnic or folkloric, contemporary, hip hop, musical theater, jazz, tap, ballet/pointe, lyrical jazz, acrobatic and ballroom.
Not eligible: Pompom, cheer/dance, baton, song and dance, production numbers (over 20 dancers), liturgical, vocals, modeling, gymnastics or aerobic dance.
PERFORMANCE TIME: Maximum length of an audition is up to 2 minutes and subject to judges’ discretion. Group auditions- 2 ½ minutes. Performance in finals shall be 2 minutes for solo and duet or 3 minutes for groups.
AUDITIONS: are open to spectators,(no video or photography) for a $5 admission fee. One coach for solo and duet performers, and two coaches for group performers are admitted at no charge.
MUSIC: Each solo/duet or group must bring a CD with only one music selection on the disk. Music should not exceed performance time limit.
COSTUMES are optional for auditions but are encouraged since photos will be taken for publicity. Dressing room facilities are limited for auditions.
APPROPRIATENESS OF THEME: This dance show is family oriented, and we ask that all performers avoid dark, controversial or otherwise inappropriate themes.

WAIVERS AND RELEASES All participants under the age of 18 must have the signature of a parent or guardian in order to enter, either as an individual or as part of a group. The signature must appear on a Roster form. By submitting your entry, you agree to the following WAIVER OF LIABILITY: Waiver and Release: I hereby waive all claims for injury, damage, or loss to my child, myself and property during my participation in the “Show Us You Can Dance” and release the Berkeley Arts Council, the Parks and Recreation Board, Musselman High School, the BC Board of Education and participating volunteers from any liability for injury, damage, or loss which may be caused by any act or omission by any of the sponsoring groups. You also agree that the Berkeley Arts Council may use photographs or video recording of your performance in order to publicize “Show Us You Can Dance” or a similar event at a subsequent time, in any medium. |

“Show Us You Can Dance” Winners Announced!
The judges had a difficult assignment on Saturday night at Musselman High school as dancers from the Tri-state area competed in the Berkeley Arts Council’s first “Show Us You Can Dance” finals for cash awards. The competition was intense, but resulted in many memorable dance, choreography and artistic performances.
At the end of the evening, while the judges were completing their deliberations, Inwood Performing Arts Studio, Tari Jo’s Studio and the Shepherd University Dance Team delighted the audience with their different styles of dance and presentation.
Cash prizes were awarded to the top winners in the Solo, Duet and Group categories, but the judges also recognized outstanding individual and group performers with special awards.
Awards in the Solo division went to Julianne Brown (Center)– First place for “Angels on the Moon”; Abbey Harman (Right)– Second Place - “Mirror, Mirror”; and Macey Rose (Left)–Third Place for “Hurt Me”.
Five duet performances competed for first and second place prizes, which went to Marina Addlesberger with Nolan Seda (Right) – Grand Pas de Deux, from “The Little Mermaid” and Abbey Harman and Maddie Taylor (Left) –“One Tribe”.
Congratulations go to the winners in the Group Competition:
Extreme Sports and Dance (Back,Left), first place Hip Hop Routine, “Look At Me Now”; Tari Jo’s Studio (Front), second place Lyrical Dance, “Lunch Lady Land”; and Rhythm and Motion Studio (Back,Right), third place Tap Routine, “Work!”
Judges special recognition award for Best Technique went to Grace Aulabaugh in “Beauty Walking Away”. Julia Barra’s costume for her “Don Quixote” solo earned an award, as did the New Hopewell Dancers novelty routine to “Waka Waka”. The Showmanship Award went to Daja Elliott in the group performance of “Work!” Julianne Brown got the Rising Star for her solo “Angels on the Moon.” - Sara DeJarnett’s solo performance in “Secrets” got Best Choreography.

Shepherd University Dance Team — “Higher Remix”
A blend of hiphop, jazz and pom, this number was choreographed by Victoria Landis and is performed by Dancers Kayla Pownall, Crystal Willett, Caitlin Shambaugh, Kaitlyn White and Victoria Landis.
The proceeds of ads, sponsorships and ticket sales all support the development of additional activities and programs in the arts.
With the support of the dance community, we hope to continue and possibly expand the “Show Us You Can Dance” program next year to provide more opportunities for dancers in our region.
